Two rare megamouth shark findings have been reported in 2017. The two would up the previous know sighting number from 61 to 63. The first specimen was found dead at the Misamis Oriental, a region in the Northern Mindanao of the Philippines.  The shark had washed onto the shoreline of Barangay Baluarte May 1. The nearly 10-foot (3m) long shark was approximately 5-feet (1.5m) wide and weighed in at an estimated 1,322 pounds (600kg). Has the 62nd rare megamouth shark been found?

Recently, a photo has emerged which may show the 62nd known specimen of the rare megamouth shark. The photo is reportedly from Balingasag, Misamis Oriental in the Philippines.  Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines posted the photo on their Facebook page.  The group believes the shark was about to be slaughtered and was seeking more information. Rare Megamouth Shark Caught -bycatch

A rare megamouth shark has been caught in Japan. The shark was unintentional netted yesterday morning near the Mie Prefecture around three miles off the Owase Port and has reportedly been sold at a fish market. It is estimated the shark weighed around one ton (907kg) and was around sixteen and one half feet long (5M). The shark lives in extremely deep water with one specimen reportedly caught in 660 feet of water. Another rare Megamouth Shark caught

For the second time in 2014 a rare Megamouth shark has been caught.  This 1,102 pound female shark died Monday while in the fisherman nets in the shallow waters of Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines.  According to the Sun Star the fisherman said the shark was already feeble when caught. Rare Megamouth shark caught in Japan

Rare Megamouth shark was caught in Shizuoka Japan. Weighing 1,500 pounds with a length of 13 feet (3.96 m) this harmless shark was captured at a depth of 2,600 feet. The shark was  given a public autopsy on May 7, 2014 by staff at the Marine Science Museum in Shizuoka City. The Megamouth shark was discovered in 1976 and is so rare, only 58 have been seen by the human eye. They pose no threat to humans as they, like whale sharks only eat plankton.
