Girl bitten by shark in New Smyrna Beach

Alexandra Masterson, 13, is recovering from a shark bite on her calf.  According to Beach Safety Rescue officers, Masterson was bodysurfing around 4:40 p.m.  just below the Ponce de Leon south jetty Inlet when she was bitten on the leg. She was able to exit the waist-deep water and alert authorities.

She went to the hospital where she received seven stitches and hospital staff said she was most likely bitten by a spinner shark.

Masterson has not been deterred from enjoying the ocean and plans on becoming a marine biologist.
