Second shark bite of 2014: Doctor sewed his own wound

James Grant was spearfishing at Garden Bay near Cosy Nook in Southland, New Zealand on Saturday when the he was bitten by a shark.

“It was pretty well latched on, I was just trying to get it off.” He told Stuff.

The 24-year-old stabbed what he believed was a seven gill shark.

“I sort of just fought the shark off. The shark got a few stabs. The knife wasn’t long enough though,” he said.

He was able to leave the water and once on shore, he began sewing up his own wound.

“I’m pretty happy I had such a thick wet suit on too,” he said.
