Spearfisherman Sam Smith was bitten by a shark off Bannisters Headland, Mollymook Beach in New South Wales today.

His fishing partner and friend Luke Sisinni said Smith spotted the shark and swam down to film it.

“He said it spun around and started coming for him, so he stabbed it with his spear to try and scare it off, but it just went ballistic and bit him,” Sisinni told the Milton Ulladulla Times.

According to Donna Wishart, spokeswoman for Surf Life Saving NSW the shark was thought to be a 3 to 5 foot long bronze whaler.

Smith is in stable condition and doctors were able to treat the lacerations on his fingers.
