As of Dec. 31, there have been 83 shark attack bites in 2023 (9 provoked and 15 fatal shark attacks) publicly reported and verified.
There have been 41 shark attack bite in the US in 2023 (20 Florida, 6 Hawaii, 2 California, 6 New York, 3 South Carolina). 2 provoked and 2 fatal (1 California, 1 Hawaii).
Twenty shark attack bites have been reported in Florida in 2023. Three provoked and zero fatal.
There have been 5 shark attacks bites in Hawaii (1 fatal shark attack). None of which are considered provoked
There have been 12 shark attack bites in Australia in 2023. Zero provoked and 4 fatal.

2023 Shark Attack Map
Each year there are around 100 shark attack bites around the globe. Most are considered minor with the patient recovering extremely quickly. When you consider the millions of people who live, work, and go in the water each day, compared to the number of shark attacks the odds are really against a negative encounter. Most people will never see a shark in the wild. However some people will lose their lives to sharks and we really do feel for those people. There are lots of things you can do to help prevent a shark attack bite. A whole list is available on the Shark Attack Prevention page. The most important thing to know before entering the water is to know the surf conditions and how to swim. More people drown each year than are bitten by sharks.
