Bodyboarder killed in shark attack marks Australia’s eighth death in country

A well-known local bodyboarder in Western Australia was killed by a shark Nov. 22, marking the eighth death by shark attack in the country for 2020..

Charles Cernobori, 59, was boarding near Cable Beach, a remote but popular beach near Broome. It was around 8:40 a.m. when witnesses saw thrashing in the water 100 to 130 feet (30 to 40M) from the beach and realized the man in the surf was in trouble. A couple rushed into the water to retrieve the bodyboarder.

Cernobori, a grandfather and father of three daughters, had lost a hand and suffered a severed thigh in the shark attack. Police were notified and rushed to the beach where they treated him before St. John Ambulance officers arrived. Unfortunately, his wounds were too severe and he died.

Police applauded the Good Samaritans who rushed into the water to assist the injured man.

“Obviously, that would have been pretty horrific for those people. It was very brave to enter the water and do what they did,” Inspector Gene Pears said.

The shark, suspected to be a tiger, was seen swimming off the beach feeding on bait balls for. Police officers fired up to 25 pistol shots at the 9- to 13-foot (3 to 4m) shark which lingered around the area for about 30 minutes after the attack

Third fatal shark attack in Western Australia.

Two other water goers died after being attacked by sharks.

Andrew Sharpe, 52, was surfing Oct. 9 when he was attacked off Wylie Bay in Esperance by an estimated 13-foot (4m) shark. He was thrown into the air, and when a friend swam to his aid, the shark returned and pulled Sharpe underwater. Despite a water rescue search, no remains were found..

Scuba diver Gary Johnson, 57, was killed near Cull Island Jan. 1. Johnson was diving with his partner when he turned off his shark shield to tie off the underwater anchor line to the sea floor. A large white shark grabbed Johnson who suffered fatal injuries.

Five others have died in the Austrailia this year and the locations have been marked on the 2020 Shark Attack Map.
