First off a live blacktip shark was found in a swimming pool of the Mariner’s Cay condominium in Hypoluxo, Florida. The woman who found the shark saw two teens running away from the pool. Florida Fish and Game rescued the shark and released it back into salt water. Security footage from the condos is being looked at. No word on whether animal cruelty charges would/could be brought.

Next up is a 3D great white’s shark animation. London-based Curiscope released a video featuring a 360-degree view of a computer-generated shark. I couldn’t get the video to play on my old computer, so not sure how it looks.

It does sound rather cool as it shows the sharks anatomy. I believe you can watch it using Google cardboard or other similar devices for an actual 3D view.

A dead sperm whale has been buried at Casuarina beach in Australia. There are fears that the whale could attract sharks. Last year surfer Tadashi Nakahara was killed by a shark near a beach that had recently buried a whale. Although that incident may be more of Correlation vs. Causation.

If you live in Malaysia, specifically Kota Kinabalu, then you can head over to Likas Bay for its first Save Our Shark awareness campaign. The University College Sabah Foundation is holding an event which will include talks on conservation, a beach cleanup, blood donations and a 20-feet shark replica made out of recycled materials. More details can be found here.

According to the article “it was highlighted that sharks were being captured and finned on Pulau Mabul. The incident shocked many tourists and scuba divers who witnessed it. Sabah Shark Protection Association (SSPA) president Aderick Chong stressed shark fishing needed to stop immediately, claiming fresh shark meat and dried shark fins were still traded openly in wet markets and shops throughout the state.”

Great to see people making a difference, so two fins up to The University College Sabah Foundation!!!

Hope you enjoyed the January 15, 2016 Random Shark News.
