Sam Morgan was surfing alone off Lighthouse beach in NSW Australia when he was bitten by a shark.

The champion junior surfer was out around 6:15 pm in water that was murky from recent rains.

Part of the shark’s mouth went underneath the surfboard, the top part of its mouth made contact with Mr. Morgan’s left thigh causing significant damage.  The 20-year-old was able to paddle back to shore on his own. He was treated on scene and flown to Gold Coast University Hospital.

He is currently in an induced coma, but is in stable condition.

The beach has been closed for 24 hours.

The location is near the area where body boarder Dale Carr was bitten in August.

The location has been marked on the 2015 shark attack bites tracking map.

UPDATE 11/13/15 Mr. Morgan is out of his coma and is doing well.
