Swimmer bitten by a shark in Florida

A swimmer was been bitten by a shark in Florida on February 11 at Melbourne Beach.

The unidentified man was near Ocean Avenue and Atlantic Street at Ocean Park when the incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m.

The 22-year-old was bitten on the hand and was treated on scene by the Brevard County Fire Rescue before being taken to the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

The beach does not have lifeguards during the winter months and signs are posted alerting beach goers to swim at their own risk.

There have been a total of 11 shark attack bites in 2017, none of which were fatal. Two with no injury have been reported worldwide. Four were reported in the US, all of which occurred in Florida. Three occurred in Australia, one of which had no injury.
