A man trying to lasso a shark was bitten by the shark he was trying to lasso.

Josh Neille was on a fishing boat off the coast of north Queensland, Australia when they caught a nine-foot lemon shark.

Neille, who runs a wildlife shelter, wrote that he was trying to help the shark and prevent its death.

“The fisherman that hooked this shark had planned to gaff it to land the shark and do what means to retrieve their gear which would result in it most likely being killed.” He wrote on YouTube “my plan was to tail rope it drag it up on the deck and use a pipe to lock in its mouth then place my arm in the pipe and retrieve the hook and trace then get a photo and release the shark and try and catch a smaller one better eating.”

However, as he tried to fit the rope around the shark’s tail, the shark turned and bit Neille on the upper thigh.

“…it was a quick and regrettable decision that I realises (sic) was a stupid move however the plan was to release the shark without having to gaff or kill the large shark bye(sic) tail roping it.” he said.

Not only was Neille bitten, but the shark was also killed.  “…after I was bitten I had too patch my leg up and the fisherman continued on with their original plan and the shark was kept and eaten and some of its carcass was used as crab bait…so there was little wast (sic) this shark species is I high numbers and are not protected and are targeted by commercial and recreational fisherman.” he said.

Neille was treated for the wound to his thigh and thanked the staff at the Weipa Hospital who he said were “very helpful”.

Anglers wishing to release their catch should consider cutting the fishing line as close to the hook as possible. Most hooks will simply rust out and leave no permanent damage.

There have been a total of 41* shark attack bites in 2017, 5 of which were fatal*; 18 were reported in the US, with 14 occurring in Florida and one in Hawaii. Eight occurred in Australia, one of which was fatal.

All locations have been marked on the 2017 Shark Attack Bites Tracking map.
