9ft Bull shark rescued

Martin County Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputy Jason Hickman and another man waded into the waist-deep water to pull the shark closer to shore.

After about 30 minutes they were able to pull the shark where Florida Oceanographic employees assisted authorities were able to remove the debris. Unfortunately the line was so tight that it actually had cut into the shark’s dorsal fin. The shark was assisted into deeper water where it swam away.

When Deputy Hickman was asked if he was afraid of getting close to such a large shark by CBS News 12 he said  “At that point in time yes, but when we actually got out there he was never aggressive at any point in time. He was just real slow moving. So he kinda calmed down the closer we got to him.”

He added “We definitely wanted to help the shark, so we knew we had to get it done. This is what we do out here on the water. Basically we’re out not only to protect the people, keep the people safe but also the animals as well.”
