A diver has died after being attacked by a shark in Cuba.

Maro Alejandro Diaz Jimenez was spearfishing on May 9, 2023 in an area known as Ojo de Tiburon. The avid fisherman was with several friends, possibly shark fishing, diving from a boat named the Eye of the Tiguron. As he was diving for a fish, he was bitten by a bull shark. Friends valiantly jumped in the water to save their comrade, but the wounds were too severe, and Jimenez died.

His grieving friends transported his body back to shore.

Another man was injured by a shark this year

An unidentified 17-year-old was around 15 miles off Majana Beach on March 25, fishing with relatives when he was bitten. Family members were able to call for emergency services who had an ambulance waiting on shore. He was taken to Ciro Redondo Hospital with a large bite extending from his forearm to his upper arm just below the shoulder. Doctors said the young man arrived in shock with massive blood loss. A local blood bank provided blood for the young man who sustained serious vascular damage to his arm and forearm.

Photos showed doctors performing surgery on the large wound, which they were thankfully able to repair and save the young man’s life.

Both locations have been marked on the 2023 Shark Attack Map.

Another man was died while trying to cross to the North America in 2021.

Alexis Fernandez, 28, was nearing Mexico when his boat broke apart. Footage from the incident shows a large floating mass that appears to be the remains of a human being struck multiple times by a large shark. Witness said the shark severed the man’s legs as authorities were recovering the body from the water.

According to Juventud Rebelde, there have been 39 unprovoked and 5 provoked shark attacks, of which 22 were fatal, in Cuba between 1749 and 2014.
